Redesign of Ny Musikk’s office spaces in Oslo.

“Ny Musikk is the Norwegian section of the ISCM (International Society for Contemporary Music) and works to promote contemporary music in Norway and Norwegian contemporary music abroad. Furthermore, Ny Musikk assists musicians and composers in Norway by providing practical, financial and professional support. The organization, which is run by composers and performers, was founded in 1938, achieving national status in 1970. Among its many tasks, Ny Musikk provides information about contemporary music for the culturally orientated community at large, and is active as a representative for contemporary music in Norway. Membership is open to all with an interest in contemporary music.”

mmw was engaged by Ny Musikk to redesign and renovate their office spaces in Oslo.
Inspired from the way Ny Musikk deals with contemporary classical music, mmw made a three step design – ‘three instruments’.

1. The first step was to make a flexible fundament for a vibrant group of people.
Inspired from the classical wooden instrument, mmw designed new enclosed offices for the regular users of the space – ‘the instrument of management’.
Glass sliding doors ensure an airy, light working station for each of the three.
Before building this part of the project, all the existing interior was torn down, the floors renewed and all the walls plastered and painted.

This phase of the project was finished and opened in October 2004.

2. The second step will be to design and build the ‘the instrument of listening’. This is a studio aesthetical space stretching from outside the entrance door, into the office space and up the stairs where it establish a new studio for listen to music.
The instrument itself is made up from sound absorbing foam.

3. The third and last instrument, is an interpretation of the 70’s analogue instruments with all the buttons, levels and meters. This makes up a total solution for a meeting situation with table, chairs and outlets for such as internet connection and phones.

The second and third step of mmw’s design is scheduled to be built during 2005.
